Conservation Agriculture and Soil Organic Carbon: Principles, Processes, Practices and Policy Options

چکیده
Intensive agriculture causes land degradation and other environmental problems, such as pollution, soil erosion, fertility loss, biodiversity decline, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which exacerbate climate change. Sustainable agricultural practices, reduced tillage, growing cover crops, implementing crop residue retention measures, have been proposed cost-effective solutions that can address degradation, food security, change mitigation adaptation by enhancing organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in soils its associated co-benefits. In this regard, extensive research has demonstrated conservation (CA) improves physical, chemical, biological properties are crucial for maintaining health increasing agroecosystem resilience to global However, despite the undertaken implement three principles of CA (minimum mechanical disturbance, permanent with residues and/or diversification) worldwide, there still many technical socio-economic barriers restrict their adoption. review, we gather current knowledge on potential agronomic, environmental, benefits drawbacks present agro-environmental policy frameworks. Research needs identified, more stringent measures urgently encouraged achieve targets.

Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration with Conservation Agriculture in the Southeastern Usa: Potential and Limitations
The carbon (C) cycle is the basis for greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Globally, agriculture is responsible for about 20% of the greenhouse gas emissions. However, this percentage does not take into account the large role that agriculture plays in the opposing processes of photosynthesis and respiration (Figure 1), as well as contributions to soil organic C sequestration via animal ...
متن کاملWeeds Management in Organic Farming through Conservation Agriculture Practices
Despite weeds are a serious threat to promotion of organic farming, relatively less attention is given to research on weed management. This article explores a scope of integration of conservation agriculture for weed control and soil protection under organic farming. Limitation in the use of agro-chemicals under OF promotes intensive tillage for weed control. Mostly, tillage leads to depletion ...
متن کاملEcological agriculture: Principles, practices, and constraints
The practice of ecological agriculture involves building the strengths of natural ecosystems into agroecosystems, purposely disturbed to produce food and fiber. The overall strategies include using practices that (a) grow healthy plants with good defense capabilities, (b) stressing pests, and (c) enhancing populations of beneficial organisms. These are accomplished by enhanced habitat managemen...
متن کاملThe Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...
